History doesn’t just live in textbooks or archives—it lives in you! At the “Finding Our Roots” event, renew your interest in the past with Southern food writer Sheri Castle, who will discuss the important link between our meals and memories. Share your stories of memorable meals at StoryCorps Mobile Booth (reservations required in advance) and enjoy free genealogical consultations, an DNA kits giveaway and family activities including a mobile dairy lab beginning at 10am. The event will conclude in the evening with a screening of Farmland and panel discussion at the Danville Science Center Digital Dome.

There will be fun and interactive activities for children. In keeping with the theme of the event, these activities were selected to help kids learn about food, agriculture and history.
1. Painting stones for garden markersGardenStones: We will pair this activity with a seed giveaway so kids can take their garden stones and matching seeds with them and hopefully be inspired to go home and plant the seeds and grow their own food.
2. Coloring & Family Tree station: We will have VDACS “VA Grown” themed coloring books and coloring supplies, along with family tree templates so that kids can work with parents/grandparents to fill one out for their family.
3. Butter Making: We will use a simple recipe and activity plan to allow kids to make and try their own butter.
4. A mobile dairy classroom. The mobile dairy is a traveling milking parlor, featuring a live cow and trained instructor who explains how milk gets from the farm to the consumer.

This event is put on by History United, Regional Public Libraries & The Health Collaborative.
