Opening Day: Design Zone science exhibit
Danville Science Center’s next big exhibit opens January 30 and will be available throughout the month. Design Zone is a non-traditional, experiential approach to math, focusing on math concepts as a tool to create and invent everything from hip-hop to skate parks. The exhibition encourages creative problem solving using algebraic thinking in a context that is relevant and fun! What does it take to create a video game or design a roller coaster that produces the biggest thrills? Guests can go behind the scenes and see how developers, producers, designers and other creative problem solvers use math and science to do amazing things.

Dino Day Festival in Martinsville
Make tracks to the Virginia Museum of Natural History on Saturday, January 30, 2016 for a festival of Jurassic proportions! Dinosaur skeletons and fossils, as well as dino-themed games, crafts and presentations will make this an event not to be missed for the dino-lover in your family!

Philpott Lake Ranger Talks – “Black Bears in Virginia”
Basset, VA
Free. A Ranger talk about the habits and characteristics of the bear and contribution to nature. Touch a black bear skull, bear claw, and a black bear hide complete with head. A bear cub puppet and various photographs demonstrate different aspects of the bear’s behavior. See a 20 minute film called “Seasons of the Bears.”

The 15th Annual Danville Storytelling Festival
For centuries people have come together to tell and listen to stories as a time honored form of entertainment that celebrate families, community and to pass along memories and wisdom.
Songs, rhymes and tales rich in humor entertain and keep alive the oral tradition. This year features Logie Meachum, Barbara Martin, Fred Motley, Tammy Tillotson, Dr. Arlene A.Carter, LaTanya Pattillo, Gary Nichols, Angela Harris and the Kummba Dance Company. 10 am – 2pm at Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History.
The festival is free and open to the public.

trainTrain Lovers Day at the Virginia Museum of Transportation
Roanoke, VA

It’s “Y” Day! February 13, 10 am to 5 pm. Snow Date February 20.
Discounted admission: $5 per person, members and children 2 and under free. Train rides are $3 per person per ride in addition to admission, children 2 and under are free.
Learn “Y” the Y6a steam locomotive is so special! This train is on loan from the Museum of Transportation in St. Louis. At the rail yard: Diesel train rides by the Roanoke Chapter NRHS
Model train displays and Roanoke Valley Model Engineers Open House; locomotive science activity; Blue Ridge PBS with “Thomas” for young fans; yarn Valentines craft; climb in the Yellow Lark taxi.
