Minecraft at Mt. Hermon Library
Fun, minecraft-oriented activities will vary from month to month and light snacks will be served. We will meet on the third Saturday of every month from 11am to 1pm.

Sunday, January 17

Philpott Lake Ranger Talks – “Beavers: Nature’s Engineer”
Basset, VA
Free. A Ranger talk about the habits and characteristics of the beaver and the actual physical science engineering applications to dam building. Wooden chips from recent beaver “cuttings” will be shared as well as twigs eaten by beavers. See a 30 minute IMAX film called “Beavers.”

MLK Day, January 18

The Danville Science Center is open on January 18!
Their next big exhibit opens later in the month, January 30, so stay tuned for that, too. But if you are looking for a way to get out of the house with the little ones, the upstairs toddler area is waiting for you.

MLK Day of Service
“Share Your Story” by volunteering at the MLK Day of Service hosted by Averett University and Danville Riverview Rotary.
There will be several projects and activities in which you can participate between 12:00 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. at Averett’s North Campus, including making t-shirt quilts and building little libraries.

And we checked: City and county libraries are closed. Amazement Square in Lynchburg, The Museum of Natural History are closed. The Greensboro Children’s museum is closed in the afternoons and only open to members in the morning.

These programs are geared for children ages birth to 5 years old. Wednesdays for Wees programs are presented at our Brosville/Cascade, Chatham, Gretna, and Mt. Hermon branches in partnership with Smart Beginnings Danville-Pittsylvania County.

January 23: Dino Day at Museum of Natural History (Martinsville VA)
10:00 am – 3:00 pm.
Make tracks to the Virginia Museum of Natural History on Saturday, January 23, 2016 for a festival of Jurassic proportions! Dinosaur skeletons and fossils, as well as dino-themed games, crafts and presentations will make this an event not to be missed for the dino-lover in your family!

January 30: Design Zone science exhibit
Danville Science Center’s next big exhibit opens January 30. Design Zone is a nontraditional, experiential approach to math, focusing on math concepts as a tool to create and invent everything from hip-hop to skate parks. The exhibition encourages creative problem solving using algebraic thinking in a context that is relevant and fun! What does it take to create a video game or design a roller coaster that produces the biggest thrills? Guests can go behind the scenes and see how developers, producers, designers and other creative problem solvers use math and science to do amazing things.

Workshop: Build a Valentine’s mailbox
Join the hands-on workshop and build a wooden Valentines mailbox to hold all your child’s valentine cards from their favorite friends. After the mailbox is built, personalize the project with paint. Free, but registration is required. 9 am – 12 on Saturday, February 6.
